The Soksabike Guide to Green Season Travel

Exploring Cambodia during the rainy season—stretching from May to November—offers a completely different perspective of the country. Often referred to as the "Green Season," this period transforms the landscape with vibrant foliage and vast, lush rice fields.

However, the dramatic weather requires a shift in how you travel. Here is how to safely and comfortably navigate Cambodia when the monsoon rains arrive.

1. Master Your Daily Timing

The biggest misconception about the rainy season is that it rains all day.

  • The Afternoon Burst: Rain typically falls just once a day in short, refreshing bursts, usually arriving in the late afternoon.
  • Morning Explorations: To make the most of your trip, schedule your outdoor sightseeing and temple visits for the early mornings. This allows you to avoid the afternoon rain, skip the crowds, and take advantage of the cooler, fresher air.
The Soksabike Standard: We carefully time our countryside excursions to maximize the morning sunshine, ensuring our guests are safely enjoying a local meal or heading back before the afternoon clouds roll in.

2. Choose Reliable Transportation

Heavy rains can temporarily disrupt rural infrastructure, making your choice of transport crucial.

  • Daylight Travel: Road conditions can become hazardous due to localized flooding on unpaved rural routes. It is highly recommended to plan all inter-city road travel strictly during daylight hours.
  • Skip the Motos: While motorcycle taxis (motos) are ubiquitous, automobiles or canopied tuk-tuks (remorks) are far safer. Canopied tuk-tuks provide essential protection against sudden downpours, while avoiding motos protects against increased accident risks on wet, dark roads.

3. Navigate the Elements Wisely

The lush environment is beautiful, but the wet conditions require a few extra health and safety precautions.

  • Avoid Flooded Terrain: Never walk through flooded areas or unguided rural fields, as murky water can obscure strong currents, hidden drop-offs, and other hazards.
  • Health Precautions: Mosquito and insect activity increases significantly during the wet months, making diligent insect bite prevention a daily necessity. Additionally, maintain a high degree of caution with food and water safety by relying exclusively on purified water and cooked meals.

By adjusting your daily rhythm and making smart transportation choices, the Green Season can easily become the most rewarding time to explore Cambodia's natural beauty.
